The movie is set in the year 1865 when President Abraham Lincoln was expecting the Civil War to end soon and the defeat of the Confederate States. He was also concerned that the court might discard his 1863 Emancipation Proclamation after the war and the slave states might defeat the Thirteenth Amendment. It is important for him to pass the amendment beforehand so that there is no possibility of any freed slaves being enslaved again. The Radical Republicans had a thought that the amendment will not get through and will be defeated, as it needed the support of different Democratic Congressmen to pass. Dozens of Democrats were acting like lame ducks after they lost the re-election in the year 1864. Lincoln’s advisors believed that he should give time to things so that the new Republican-heavy Congress comes into existence. Lincoln remains firm on his belief about having the amendment in place before the war concludes and the southern states are re-admitted.
The movie is an epic story of Lincoln’s life and political career showing his efforts toward the progress and advancement of the American people.
